Becky Spencer Signs Permanent Deal With Chelsea

Becky Spencer has joined Chelsea on a permanent deal, it was announced on Monday. The deal covers one year, with the possibility of extending it for a further season. The goalkeeper was on loan with the treble winners for the second half of last season.

Spencer was part of the first ever Spurs WSL squad in 2019, having joined from West Ham. She made 75 appearances in the top tier, keeping 18 clean sheets. In total, she made 95 Spurs appearances in all competitions. Perhaps the most notable was the 2024 FA Cup quarter final against Manchester City, in which she saved penalties from Chloe Kelly and Alex Greenwood in the shoot-out.

Increasingly, Spencer came under some criticism for her performances. She was replaced by the now departed Barbora Votikova in goal for the famous North London Derby victory over Arsenal, although later returned to claim her place between the posts. Lize Kop's arrival finally saw Spencer lose the number one spot. It's worth noting that young 'keeper Eleanor Heeps signed a new deal in April.

Becky Spencer previously played for Chelsea between 2016 and 2018. Commentating on her permenant return to the club, she said:

I’m over the moon to be given the opportunity to stay at this magical club, it somewhere which has always felt like home for me. We have amazing fans and I look forward to coming back into this environment on a permanent basis and working alongside the great goalkeeper's union we have.

"We are really pleased to welcome Becky to the goalkeeping union permanently,’ said Paul Green, Chelsea's head of women's football. "Her experience will provide cover and enable the younger goalkeepers to pursue valuable development opportunities. She settled in well during her loan and is a great character to have in the group. We all look forward to working with her again next season."
