Maite Oroz Suffers Devastating Injury

Maite Oroz has ruptured her ACL, Tottenham Hotspur Women announced on Tuesday. It's devastating news that ends the 27-year-old Spaniard's season.

The club said in a statement that the injury occurred in the 3-0 Subway Cup win over Birmingham City on Sunday. Oroz  "will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and, following that, will begin her rehabilitation with our medical team." it continued. "She will be have our love and support every step of the way."

It is particularly upsetting as Oroz, a technically gifted player, has not featured much under Martin Ho, but was given a chance on Sunday. The new manager has tended to rely on more physical players like Drew Spence and Eveliina Summanen in order stabilise a previously vulnerable defence. With Beth England dropping back to support Cathinka Tandberg, it was hard to fit Oroz in.

ACL Injuries RockingWomen's Football

The former Real Madrid co-captain, who has 15 caps for her country, now joins Ella Morris in having to get over a second ACL injury. Kit Graham is also only just coming back having endured the issue twice.

The issue is though rocking the women's game beyond Hotspur Way. Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger and Liverpool midfielder Marie Hobinger have both suffered it in recent days. Liverpool also announced today that Norwegian forward Sophie Román Haug had injured her ACL.

It's clear that more research needs to go into discovering why female players face this problem at far greater rates than their male colleagues.
