Ella Morris Suffers Devastating ACL Injury

Ella Morris has suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury whilst away training with England. After featuring 14 times for the u23s, the 22-year-old had just received her first senior Lionesses call-up. She will undergo surgery and begin her recovery back at Tottenham.

Morris was with the group preparing for their upcoming Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain. She was also in contention to be in Sarina Wiegman's squad as they try to defend their Euros title in Switzerland in a few weeks time.

The news is heartbreaking. Morris has had previous significant injuries, including an injury to the ACL on her other leg during the depths of the pandemic. She also missed a significant amount of the latest season due to injury, ultimately making 12 appearances when back to full fitness. By the end of the season the flying fullback was really making an impact. Indeed, she was one of the few positives in what was a terrible season for Spurs.

The issue of ACL injuries is becoming an increasingly prominent one in women's football, with a number of high-profile stars suffering the long-term injury. Amongst them are England captain Leah Williamson, who missed leading her country in their run to the World Cup final in 2023 as a result of it. Consequently, Fifa have funded some research into why women seem to incur the injury more than their male counterparts.

Ella Morris is still young and will surely have plenty more chances on the international stage. For now, she is set for a summer watching Euro 2025 at home and another long rehabilitation.
