Preview: Liverpool vs Tottenham Women in the WSL on 27 April, 2025, confirmed team news

Tottenham Women's Manager Robert Vilahamn previews the Liverpool vs Tottenham WSL game
Tottenham Hotspur Women face Liverpool on Sunday, April 27 in a game that kicks-off at 12pm. After the chaotic defeat to Aston Villa last weekend, it's quite hard to know what to make of this one.

Liverpool currently sit in the Best of Rest spot in the WSL, albeit 12 points behind Man City in fourth. Despite being winless in 8 games, Spurs are actually only 6 points off their opponents. A win would give them a real chance of moving up the table and ending the season with some positivity.

Yet wins just seem so far away from Robert Vilahamn's side right now. That disastrous defeat to Villa rather summed it up. The stoppage time winner from Kirsty Hanson came as, following the introduction of Bethany England, Tottenham looked like they could come from 0-2 behind to win. But another defensive laps cost Spurs women at least a point.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's game, the Spurs manager insisted once again that "we focus mostly on our own principles," when it comes to playing style. "We're not really going to change too much depending on what they're doing."

Winning the Midfield Battle

Vilahamn will be without Eveliina Summanen and Drew Spence in midfield, as both are suspended. Asked how he plans to maintain a physical midfield in their absence, Vilahamn said: "we have a plan for that". There needs to be, otherwise Spurs will find themselves totally dominated and out the game. Maite Oroz is a wonderfully skilful player but needs some protection in order to play at her best.

Bethany England has continued to recover from injury and "she probably can take more minutes this game," said Vilhaman. However, he had to decide whether to start and then remove her or, as he did against Villa, begin with Martha Thomas and bring the striker on. The swede has decided to start his skipper.

Having seen the change she brought about after coming on, it seems clear to me that England playing the first is the right decision. She may be able to help get her side ahead whereas coming on to chase down yet another deficit would have been a thankless task.
